Such a great week of outfits again!! It was so much fun to see you style so many of your recently acquired new-to-you pieces already; I 1000% agree with the “just wear the thing” mentality, and I often find myself that the most exciting part of a new purchase is actually getting to start styling and wearing it with other things I already own rather than the shopping and acquisition itself. I absolutely love your pirate outfit, and the patchwork vest was also an awesome look! My ultimate favourite, though, would have to be your dental appointment armour outfit - those colours and textures together work so well!

And thank you for the shoutout! The Movie Star Wrap deserves some recognition :)

Thank you so much, Maddy! It's exciting to incorporate new pieces - or NOT! - into new looks. You're right, that's the best part - HAVING the thing and wearing it. Shopping is fun, but unfulfilling if you don't actually wear the pieces.

Ha, I do suit the piratey vibe, yar? My favourite look of the week was the vest one.

So happy to have met you. Thanks!

Maddy Kwaka's avatar

Absolutely!! You really do make the pirate vibe so chic it’s actually super impressive :)

The vest look was so great, I can see why it was your favourite. 90s fashion was some of the best and is still such a great resource for inspiration that I look to all the time (and definitely not just for its minimalism moment that everyone is going crazy for right now).

Thank you so much ☺️ I love getting to chat about clothes and your posts are always such a joy to read!

I have a lot of fond memories of the 90s clothes I wore, and it’s fun revisiting them in different ways later in my life.

🥰 Thank you.☺️

Nippleless merfolk 😂 I love your way with words. The creativity just oozes out of you. I especially love your patchwork goddess outfit. Not everyone can wear a maxi skirt as well as you can. But 19 years of hot flashes!? That’s not fair. Eek

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

I call it like I see it, Danielle! That's my favourite outfit too - I adore maxi skirts.

Nope, it's not...but they are not as bad as they used to be, and I don't really notice them . They're kind of tapering off as I enter my cronage.

Excellent Scarfology. Not only the movie star wrap, but the butterfly 🦋 shawl and so many other great accessories. I didn’t know that fact about Anthony Head’s brother.

Have a great week Sheila. X

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

Ooh, I'm a scarfologist! Aw, thank you!

I have a lot of weird facts about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and its cast, rambling around in my head, lol.

Thank you so much for being here, Margaret!

Those Docs are even better than I expected!! What a find!! Thank you for sharing them so I could see. :) I've started my hunt on Vinted for something similar!

Also - I love how you moved that scarf around! That's something I've never considered doing, but it makes the experience of wearing it so much more fun!

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

They are super-cute, and very comfy. They've softened up some since I got them (they were close to new, although I did buy them used). Good luck!

I love playing with what I'm wearing - thank you for that! I hope you'll try it out yourself, Rebecca.

I’m already perusing my oft-neglected scarf drawer! :)

I used to wait to wear new things but now I wear them ASAP (unless they are very out of season, but you can always layer, I guess. If you want). Life is short! You look AMAZING as always.

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

Yes! I totally agree - I usually try to get in at least one wearing immediately so that I can see if it's worth keeping (or going another round in its proper season). Aw, thank you so much, my friend. I hugely appreciate you being here.

Arrrr Matey! You’re a gorgeous pirate my friend. Sadly, it hasn’t been tricorn weather lately. Loved the snakey outfit, the skirt is gorgeous. 💕

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

Aw, thanks, honey! No, too windy - I'm sure the tricorn would blow off. Thank you, dearest Yvo - see you on Saturday!

LOL Not only did I want to but I DID and that was before reading your footnote #5. ;-) Pussycat Pussycat I love you…

Some pieces (clothing or accessories) simply have to be kept because they have a history that sparks a memory…

Holy mackerels, I hadn't realized your Mom's polio history. My great Aunt had polio and walked with a brace and a cane for the rest of her life, and a colleague of mine had polio - she was born 1 year before me, just before the vaccine came out - and also walked with a brace.

I continue to love your snaky pirate Friday outfit. Oh yes, AND the leopard mesh tee. Well, also the black dress over it, and your striped top and skirt for that friggin' hot day…

Hoping the temps have leveled off to a consistent, manageable and delightful range!

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

That was for you! 🥰 Ha!

Yes, absolutely, they’re the ones we regret when we let them go.

I actually didn’t know that much either until we were working on her book during the pandemic; I learned a ton about her during those years.

Thank you, my friend. 💕 Eh, it’s just weather, always changing!

Oh, my gawd...the patchwork 'fit!!! I love it right down to the fabulous shoes! If I tried that, I'd look like something from Babes in Toyland! Every look is fabulous, and I do love a good pirate outfit, but the patchwork...well, it definitely gives me pirate vibes so it's a win win! I love how ruthless you are about your clothes. I have been getting much better at that. Do y'all have air conditioning? I have never been to your neck of the woods so I wasn't sure. I would be a puddle of goo without it. And, yes, to the natural fabrics. Polly and her annoying cousin, Esther, just make me "glow" thinking about them! I'm sorry I'm late, but that seems to be my running theme these days!

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

Thanks, Marsha! That's my favourite as well. I have to be ruthless - I can't keep it all, and it doesn't all work for me.

Most businesses have AC, but most homes here do NOT. It really doesn't get that warm here on a consistent basis.

The Fran Fine database!!! Thank you for introducing this into my life.

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

Isn’t it the best ever? So much work involved!

Damn it, you’ve got me back on my futile quest for my own 3 words yet again… I always envy how people who’ve nailed their words use them in a practical way, and I love and understand how you’ve wielded them to decide which pieces stay and which can be lovingly and summarily set free. Maybe I should just ask all my Substack friends to figure out my 3 words for me 😂

Always appreciate living vicariously in your Fluevogs! They’re such a treat to look at, though I’d never wear them (me and heels parted ways loooooong ago)

Angela Jones's avatar

And you had a mesh miss? Shocked! And yes, I had to go back to last week’s newsletter to take a look at the piece.

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

I didn’t wear it. Blerg, didn’t work!

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

I like the three words - they help keep me in whatever lane I'm feeling, and are useful when something's not quite working.

Fluevog makes LOTS of non-heels, and I have been dipping my toe into the men's selections lately. They are superbly comfortable and funky! If you ever see a store, go in and try some on (then stalk them online).

Love love the Duran Duran inspo! They are forever chic and the Valentino scarf is so versatile to wear so many ways (and pretty!). I also want your grad dress!!

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

Thanks so much, Fawnia! I guess most of my big influences are from the 80s, as that's when I was really getting into fashion and clothes. I adore the Valentino scarf - it's so fun!

The grad dress was cotton and was by now-defunct brand Barbara Barbara. I bought it in Honolulu while we were on our family vacation - I remember seeing that brand in Glamor magazine back in the day! The bottom half is a pencil skirt, FYI - there are no full-length pictures!

A huge yes to outfit planning and wearing great looks/armor at medical appointments. I miss The Nanny and Fran Fine, the costume design and show were so good.

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

Thank you, Tina! Why is it so hard to remember to practice that self-care, to take the time to create? Wish I was better at it, more consistent.

I didn’t watch the show, and now I regret it - I admit, I spent close to an hour looking at all the outfits by designer!

Leanne's avatar

The peplum on your graduation dress reminds me of your beautiful blue dress you had made for your 50th Sheila. You look divine in both. Thanks as always for the joy, humour and inspiration. With love, Leanne from Australia

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

Leanne! You remember that dress! It’s been 9 years! Thank you so much for being here!💕🥰

What would I give to dig through your jewellery stash! It's the absolute coolest.

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

Aw, thank you! If you ever want me to spotlight anything, just ask! 💕 Thanks so much for being here, Elaine!

You have a Way With Scarves that is enviable, Sheila!

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

Aw, thank you, Cheryl! 🥰

Sandra's avatar

I really like your pirate outfit, and I love your' few fucks to give' attitude. Sandra

Sheila (of Ephemera)'s avatar

Thanks so much, Sandra! We waste so much time worrying what others think about what we wear…but no one really cares! I appreciate you being here, thank you!💕
